Army to help hunt for man-eater leopards in Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu: In the face of increased fear psychosis among people living in the mountainous and remote areas of the Jammu and Kashmir due to increasing leopard attacks, the Army will join the State Wildlife Department in its hunt for the animals. ``Army has agreed to launch a hunt for the man-eater leopards, who have attacked villages, cattle and children in Rajouri, Udhampur and Poonch districts of Jammu and Kashmir over the six-month period,'' Wildlife Department sources said.

12 killed

Twelve people, including four children, were killed, 39 injured and over 100 cattle killed in leopard and bear attacks in the three districts.

Public outcry

A public outcry prompted the Chief Wildlife Warden to first seek assistance from police and later from the Army's Northern Command headquarters, they said. — PTI
