Bangalore: Not enough bright young people are joining the Indian Army and Karnataka's share in the armed forces has been coming down.

While routine and periodical recruitment drives may help, the Indian Army wants to reach out to college students who could have a career ahead of them as Army officers and technical personnel.

For the first time, the Army has decided to reach out to students directly through its nationwide campaign "Mission Career".

    Job opportunities

Various career opportunities that exist at the officer cadre are being publicised on campuses.

In Bangalore, "Mission Career" started on November 7 and is still going on.

The team has been visiting the 50 most prestigious schools and colleges in the city, making direct contacts with students.

    Presentations

There are presentations, assessment and feedback sessions with students and their parents.

The entire exercise has been made interactive, allowing students and parents to clarify all possible doubts.

The selected students will be given an opportunity to visit the MEG camp here and have a real life experience and understand the career that they may want to choose.

    Challenging

The message from the Army to students is "career opportunities in Indian Army today equip youth with all necessary skills for personal and professional development critical in a tough and competitive environment."

An Army officer's needs of housing, healthcare, and education for their children are all completely provided for. The Army inculcates a sense of heroism and pride in saving one's country.

    Campaign

These make it different from other career options. The two-month long campaign launched simultaneously in several cities is to cover two lakh students altogether.

It is expected that 800 to 1,400 prospective candidates from each city will visit Army establishments.

This means around 40,000 prospects having close interaction with Army officers and exposure to Army establishments.
