AIADMK plans protest meetings

CHENNAI: All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) general secretary Jayalalithaa on Sunday said the party would hold public meetings at all district headquarters on December 10 on the Mullaperiyar issue.

In a statement here, she said the AIADMK, through these meetings, would condemn the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government for its "failure to resort to expeditious measures" to raise the water level in the dam to 142 feet as per the Supreme Court order and protect the State's interests. — Special Correspondent

Probe sought into death of girl student

SALEM: A fact-finding team here has urged the State Government to constitute an enquiry commission with a retired High Court judge as its head to go into the mysterious death of S. Sukanya, the Plus-II student of the Omalur Fatima Girls Higher Secondary School.

The team was represented by members from various forums including the Centre for Protection of Civil Liberties-TN, Tamil Desiya Valakuraignargal Sangam, Thamilaga Odukkapattor Viduthalai Iyakkam, Thamilaga Ilaignar Iyakkam, some individuals and a few students from the Salem Law College. — Special Correspondent

NGO functionaries meet Chief Minister

CHENNAI: Functionaries of two non-government organisations--Vidya Sagar and Banyan--met Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi at the Secretariat on Sunday and handed over a memorandum highlighting the need for evolving a policy for the disabled.

Accompanied by some physically and mentally challenged persons, the functionaries pleaded with the Chief Minister to ensure proper implementation of various schemes of the Government for promoting the interests of the disabled, official sources said. — Special Correspondent

"India cooperating well with Sri Lanka"

RAMANATHAPURAM: India is cooperating well with Sri Lanka in arresting the smuggling of `illegal items' to the island nation, according to Sri Lankan Deputy Commissioner P.M. Amza. He was talking to press persons after meeting the Sri Lankan Tamil students at the Mandapam camp and teachers who came from Sri Lanka to take special classes for them. Asked about the recent seizure of explosives materials meant for Sri Lanka and arrest of four persons, Mr. Amza said the Government was taking steps to control the illegal activities. Asked about frequent shooting incidents against Tamil Nadu fishermen by Sri Lankan Navy, Mr. Amza said his Government was very much concerned about innocent fishermen. But the country was facing `serious threat' from its seaside and it had to take note of `other elements'. — Staff Reporter

No more "police harassment"

SALEM: The police will not harass palmyrah tree climbers under the ruse of eradicating illicit liquor, Agricultural Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam said here on Sunday. He said steps would be taken to market the palmyrah products not only in the domestic but also in the foreign markets. Board Chairman Kumari Anandan also spoke. — Special Correspondent

Killed

ERODE: One person died when two motorcycles collided on Saturday. According to the police, Sivaraj (45) of Sivagiri Kattur was on his motorcycle to Pasur with his friend Balu, when his vehicle collided with another at Pasur junction. Sivaraj died on the way to the hospital. Balu and Kesavan, riding the other motorcycle sustained serious injuries, and were admitted to a private hospital. — Staff Reporter

Commits suicide

ERODE: A 28-year-old man committed suicide on Friday, following the death of his friend.

According to the police, Madhavan (29) and his friend Anthonisamy of Mariapuram, Thalawady, went to Madhahalli forest to hunt rabbits.

But, Madhavan accidentally fell into a well and drowned.

A dejected Anthonisamy returned home and hanged himself. — Staff Reporter

ERODE: In view of the annual Mariamman festival at Karungalpalayam, a suburb of Erode, a kundam (fire walking) was conducted on Sunday, in which thousands of men and women took part. The temple car festival was held in the evening.

Foundation laid

ERODE: The Handlooms and Textiles Minister N.K.K.P. Raja on Sunday laid the foundation for the construction of two classrooms each at Veerappampalayam, Manickkampalayam and Suriampalayam and three classrooms at Periyar Street, Erode, at Rs. 19.35 lakh.

The Minister said the classrooms were constructed under Sarva Siksha Abhyan, and that the construction was handed over to the Rural Educational Committee. He hoped the works would be completed by March.

Municipal chairman K. Kumar Murugesh and chairperson of Erode Panchayat Union Gokilavani were present.

NAMAKKAL: The increasing crimes against women and the need for creating awareness among women about their rights were highlighted in the programme organised by the social welfare department here recently.

District social welfare officer Padma Kumareshwari spoke on the socio-economic condition of the women and measures to protect them from domestic violence. — Staff Reporter

Rice seized

Tuticorin : The Civil Supplies Department seized 700 kg of rice meant for the Public Distribution System illegally transported in a lorry here on Saturday. One Jude was arrested.

Official sources said a special squad led by R Natarajan, Special Tahsildar (civil supplies) intercepted the lorry at Boopalrayapuram, based on information.

Interrogation of the driver revealed that the rice, hidden in 12 bags, was smuggled from South New Street in the town to a godown at Krishnarajapuram.

Farmer electrocuted

TIRUNELVELI : A farmer was electrocuted on Sunday when he was ploughing his field. The police said P. Chelladurai (45) of Veeranam under the Veerakeralamputhur police station limits was electrocuted when he tried to remove the live electric wire lying on the field in a bid to save his bullock. The Veerakeralamputhur police have filed a case.

Examinations

MADURAI : Private candidates applying for the higher secondary examinations to be held in March 2007 should send their applications to the following address between December 4 and 15, said a press release.

Those who have attempted unsuccessfully once should pay the required amount in the Treasury along with two photographs and a photocopy of mark sheets with the seal of the head master of the school in which they had studied. Those who are attempting to write the examinations for the first time a couple of years after finishing SSLC should send their original mark sheets and transfer certificates.

Meditation camp

MADURAI : The Vipassana Meditation Centre has planned to conduct a 10-day free residential meditation camp for people who want to experience inner peace.

The participants have to observe a code of conduct. Every day, the camp would begin at 4 a.m. It will be conducted in Hindi, English and Tamil between December 22 and January 1, 2007 at SDH Jain Vidyalaya, Tiruppalai. All those above 15 years of age can attend the camp.

Two killed in road accident

PUDUKOTTAI: M. Chinniah (35) and his son C. Karuppiah (7) were killed in a road accident involving a two-wheeler and a State Transport Corporation bus at Nedunchery near here on Sunday.

The two were coming by a two-wheeler on the Tiruchi - Pudukottai Highway when the accident occurred. The bus driver, Anandababu, has been arrested.

Minister visits Big Temple

THANJAVUR: Union Minister for Panchayati Raj Mani Shankar Aiyer visited the Big temple here on Sunday.

He also visited the art gallery, Saraswathi Mahal Library and Airavateswaraswamy temple at Darasuram. Heavy police protection was provided.

Booth opened

PUDUKOTTAI: A booth to create awareness of disability among public was inaugurated at the new bus stand here on Sunday. The booth, set up by the Action on Disability and Development India, Tiruchi,was declared open by the Assistant General Manager, National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, N. Kesavamurthi.

It will be open for one week and will contain booklets, wall-posters and audio and videocassettes on legislation protecting the rights of the disabled, programme manager A. Lakshmi said.

Idols stolen

TIRUCHI: Unidentified persons stole three stone idols and a `pottu mani' from the Kaliamman temple on Tiruvanaikovil Main Road here on Saturday night.

Police conducted enquiries and a sniffer dog was brought to the spot to track the culprits.

Fingerprint experts were also summoned.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level at the Mettur dam stood at 115.39 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Saturday.

The inflow was 5,025 cusecs and the discharge 9,684 cusecs.
