CUDDALORE: The `Vazhndhu Kattuvom Thittam' was launched at Nallur Panchayat Union in Cuddalore district on Sunday. To mark the event, Collector Gagandeep Singh Bedi gave away cheques for Rs. 35,000 each to 10 panchayats in that union. The Collector said the scheme was meant for creating livelihood avenues for marginalised sections, including the poorest of the poor, handicapped, widows, elderly people and those afflicted with chronic diseases. The primary aim of the scheme was to identify such persons through community participation and to assist them form self-help groups to be trained in revenue generation exercises. He said that to start with, the scheme was being implemented in the 64 panchayats of Nallur union. The monetary assistance of Rs. 35,000 was extended initially to the 10 panchayats such as Ganapathikurichi, Pelanthurai, Kilimangalam, Kaaraiyur, Venkarumbur, Maaligi Kottam, Kosapallam, Thazha Nallur, Thuraiyur and P.Poovanur. The money would be utilised for staging cultural programmes to create awareness, Mr. Bedi added.
