VOICING THEIR DEMANDS: Members of the Akhila Karnataka Angavikalara Horata Samiti protesting against the withdrawal of concessions to people with disabilities in Gulbarga on Sunday.
GULBARGA: Members of the Akhila Karnataka Angavikalara Horata Samiti on Sunday observed World Disabled Day as a "Black Day" and took out a procession to the Deputy Commissioner's office protesting against the withdrawal of benefits and concessions to persons with disabilities by the State Government. President of the samiti Subash Chandra Hosmani in a memorandum submitted to the Deputy Commissioner Pankajkumar Pandey said the State Government had withdrawn concessions such as bus passes for physically challenged persons and failed to provide reservation for people with disabilities in jobs. He said the Government had no right to celebrate World Disabled Day. The memorandum said earlier physically challenged persons were given free bus passes and later this was given by collecting Rs. 250 to enable them to travel up to 100 km distance on the pass. Now even that facility had been withdrawn. The Government was not providing ration cards to physically challenged persons at subsidised rates, he added. Mr. Hosmani said the State Government should reverse its decision to withdraw bus passes for physically challenged persons and issue directions to the KSRTC and other transport corporations to issue free bus passes to physically challenged persons to enable them to travel throughout the State.
