`Persons with disabilities need opportunities, not sympathy'

`Reservation of jobs for those with disabilities not being implemented'

GULBARGA: State Award Winner Dattu Agarwal, president of the Physically Challenged Welfare Association, on Sunday made a plea for the appointment of a panel to ensure implementation of reservation for people with disabilities in government employment.

Speaking at the function to mark World Disabled Day, Mr. Agarwal, who is visually impaired, said the 5 per cent reservation for those with disabilities in the jobs was not being implemented by many departments during recruitment and the Government should take steps to see that the reservation quota meant for the physically challenged is filled up during recruitments.

He said physically challenged persons do not require sympathy but only opportunities to prove their talent. Inaugurating the celebrations, Agriculture Marketing Minister Sharanabasappa Dharshanapur reiterated the commitment of the Government to extend all help to people with disabilities .

Animal Husbandry Minister Revu Naik said child marriage was one reason for physical deformities among infants awareness was needed about the dangers of child marriage. Seven students of the Government Blind School who had scored high marks in the SSLC examination were honoured.
