LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav on Sunday alleged that the recent desecration of the statue of B.R. Ambedkar in Kanpur was a conspiracy by his political rivals to defame and malign his Government. "Our opponents have become frustrated and perturbed by the measures taken by the Government for the poor and downtrodden and are hatching conspiracies to defame and malign my Government'', Mr. Yadav said at a function here. Mr. Yadav claimed that the law and order situation in the State was ``far better'' than in States like Delhi. In Muzaffarnagar, Sports Minister R.K. Choudhary called it a ``conspiracy'' by some political parties to gain mileage. Mr. Choudhary said his party would take out a massive rally on December 6 in Meerut against the incident and raising other Dalit issues.
Probe ordered
A magisterial inquiry was ordered on Sunday by the Government into the alleged desecration. State police chief Bua Singh and Chief Secretary (Home) Satish Agarwal, who arrived here to review the law and order situation, told a joint press conference that the Government had taken up the matter seriously. Superintendent of Police Sabharaj Singh said the former Station House Officer of Kakadeo police station, Deepa Singh, who was earlier removed from active duty, was suspended in connection with the alleged vandalisation of the statue.
