Boy's death: mob torches vehicles

Special Correspondent

Ahmedabad: An irate mob set fire to about a dozen vehicles of the Surat Municipal Corporation and pelted stones at police personnel after a 13-year-old boy came under a truck in Gopi Talao locality in Surat on Sunday evening.

A large number of trucks, tractors and dumpers were parked in the locality, where construction work was in progress. The boy came under the truck when the driver was reversing it.

As the news of the death spread, several people, mostly slum-dwellers, gathered at the construction site and set fire to other Corporation vehicles parked there.

As police personnel reached the spot, the mob pelted stones, injuring a few. The police resorted to a lathi charge to disperse them. The situation was "tense, but yet under control" late in the evening.
