Brinda Karat prevented from entering Nagpur

NAGPUR: Police on Sunday barred the entry of Communist Party of India (Marxist) Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat along with five Dalit leaders into the city.

The Dalit leaders — Prakash Ambedkar, Ramdas Athawale, Jogendra Kawade, Sulekha Kumbhare and Rajendra Gavai — were likely to participate in the protest against the Khairlanji killings, police said.

Though police have denied permission to Dalit organisations to take out a march here on Monday, they are likely to organise a peace meeting.

The Dalits had planned to assemble at `Deekshabhoomi' where B.R. Ambedkar had embraced Buddhism in 1956. Police appealed to the people not to assemble there as it was a "sacred and historical place."

Night curfew was re-imposed in the violence-hit Aurangabad as a precautionary measure, police said. A 12-hour curfew was re-imposed at 8 p.m., sources said. — PTI
