Chief Secretary inspects Tambaram bridge site

Staff Reporter

Inspection follows Madras High Court directive

TAMBARAM: The Chief Secretary, L.K.Tripathy, on Saturday visited the construction site of a road over-bridge being built to replace the railway level crossing near Tambaram Sanatorium Railway station.

He was accompanied by K. Allaudin, Secretary, Highways Department, and officials from other Government agencies.

Earlier this year, C.P. Ramachandran, honorary secretary of East Tambaram Twelfth Ward Residents' Welfare Association had filed a public interest litigation petition in the Madras High Court, seeking an access to the bridge, under construction, from East Tambaram.

Access to bridge

The High Court directed the constitution of a three-member committee headed by the Chief Secretary. The committee in turn asked RITES Limited to make a thorough study and submit its report.

RITES met residents of East Tambaram and Sanatorium and Saturday's inspection was made following its report, officials noted. The Highways Department had deprived them of an access to the bridge from East Tambaram, residents said.

They also pointed out to officials that the present delay was caused due to cases pending in court over acquiring land from Chitlapakkam and Kadaperi.

Only solution

The only solution to the problem was in providing an access from Bharatha Matha Street. Residents of Kadapperi were upset that officials did not visit their area as a section of them had gone to court against the Highways Department.
