MLA to receive grievances

Bidar: Prakash Khandre, MLA, has started a programme to receive people's grievances at villages. The first phase of the programme will be held at the Gram Panchayat levels. In the next phase, he will visit villages, he said in Bhalki on Sunday. He said that the programme was launched in Ambe Sangavi village on Saturday. Mr. Khandre said he received complaints and grievances about ration cards, old age pension, drinking water, widow pension, power supply and other issues.

ABVP charge

HUBLI: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad has alleged that it is not being given a chance to make a representation to the inquiry committee set up by the State Government to look into the irregularities at the Karnataka State Women's University, Bijapur. In a press release, Prabhudev Kappagal, ABVP State secretary, has condemned the delay in giving the organisation an opportunity to bring to light some of the cases of misappropriation of funds and misuse of power in the university. — Staff Correspondent

Bangalore: The Union Ministry of Consumers Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has nominated B.G. Venkateshalu Naidu of Bangalore as its nominee on the Board of Directors of the National Cooperative Consumers Federation of India Limited. BANGALORE: The new office-bearers of the Political Science Teachers' Association of Bangalore University assumed office. They are: B.C. Malleshappa, APS Arts and Commerce College, Bangalore (president); Syeda Noor Afza, Mahrarani Arts College, Bangalore; C.P. Ponnu Swamy, Government Arts College, Bangalore; Nanjundappa, Government College, Kolar; and T. Ningaiah, Government First Grade College, Kudur (vice-presidents); C.L. Dhanapal, Kuvempu First Grade College, Kengal, Channapatna (secretary); Arethimme Gowda, V.V. Puram Arts and Commerce College, Bangalore (joint secretary), and M.N. Nagaraj, Government Arts College, Bangalore (treasurer), a press release said. — Special Correspondent.

Policemen suspended for assaulting man

DAVANGERE: Five policemen, including a head constable, were placed under suspension for allegedly assaulting a person who was brought to the police station for questioning. According to police sources, Rajappa was brought to the police station pertaining to a case and he was beaten up. Rajappa, who sustained serious injuries, had been admitted to the Manipal Hospital. Based on the report, Superintendent of Police Sonia Narang reportedly placed the four policemen under suspension and ordered for an enquiry into the incident. — Staff Correspondent

Tension in Kallushetra

HASSAN: Tension prevailed in Kallushetra Halli in Belur taluk on Saturday evening following the murder of Puttaraju by Prakash and seven others. Four persons were injured and are undergoing treatment in the government hospital in Hassan. The situation grew tense when followers of Puttaraju wanted to bury his in front of the accused, Prakash's, residence. Minister H.K. Kumaraswamy, who visited the village, pacified Puttaraju's family and the body was buried on his land. Belur Deputy Superintendent of Police Prabhakar and his staff camped in Kallushetra Halli village on Saturday night. — Staff Correspondent

Sentenced

HASSAN: Additional District and Sessions Judge H.S. Ramanna sentenced Mahesh, Thimme Gowda and Mohan for assaulting Puttalakshmi and her husband Nanjaiah alias Dyavaiah of Rajanahalli village in Alur Taluk. The accused damaged their land, abused them and threatened their lives. The court said the complaint filed under the provisions of prevention of atrocity on Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes is not proved but case is proved under the sections of Indian Penal Code .

Elocution competition

DHARWAD: Department of Health and Family Welfare has organised an elocution competition for High School students as part of the World AIDS Day at Basel Mission High School for Girls, here on December 6 at 11 a.m. The headmasters of high schools in the district are requested to register the names of two students from their schools, with the headmaster of Basel Mission School before December 5, District Health and Family Welfare Officer S.D. HUBLI: Karnataka Komu Souharda Vedike, Dharwad District Unit, has condemned the arrest of members of the vedike in Chikmgalur district when they were participating in "Souharda Nadige" organised in protest against the "Shobha Yatre" of Sangh Pariwar. In a release issued here, the vedike office bearers Devanand Jagapur, Abbaiah Prasad, Babajan Mudhol, Rajashekhar Mensinkai, Krishna Jakkappanavar has criticised the Deputy Commissioner for permitting shobha yatre and arresting the vedike activists. — Staff Correspondent

Award

HUBLI: National level Sepak Takraw player P. Manjunath of Hubli has been awarded "Chanakya-Kautilya Indian Award - 2006" instituted by the Chanakya Foundation, Bangalore. The award was presented to Mr. Manjunath at a function held in Bangalore on Friday, a release said. — Staff Correspondent

Literature camp

Karwar: Writer Na.D'souza has said that the language used in children's literature should reach their brains and touch their hearts. Inaugurating a two-day camp on children's literature organised jointly by State Sahitya Academy and Dinakara Desai Pratisthan, at Ankola on Saturday, he said rhymes in Kannada literature was more effective than English rhymes. Kuvempu, Panje Mangesha Ray, Dinakara Desai and other writers had enriched children's literature, he said. However, academic writers have neglected it.
