Bangalore: A Central Crime Branch (CCB) team on Sunday gunned down in an encounter Nagaraja alias Shimoga Naga, who was involved in 31 cases. According to sources, the officials reportedly learnt that Shimoga Naga would be coming towards Hebbal from Tumkur on Saturday night. Ramesh Chandra, Assistant Commissioner of Police, CCB, Ravikanthe Gowda, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime), and a few inspectors kept watch near the railway gate on Tumkur-Hebbal Road. Around 6 a.m., the police reportedly spotted the accused coming in a car without a number plate. As they tried to overtake and intercept the car, Shimoga Naga allegedly opened fire and tried to ram his car against that of the police. Police reportedly fired eight rounds at him. Shimoga Naga, who was injured, was taken to M.S. Ramaiah Hospital, where he reportedly died during treatment. The body would be subjected to inquest and post-mortem examination, a press release said. The police have seized a revolver, six bullets and the car. Senior police officials visited the spot. A case has been registered in Hebbal Police Station. On October 16, Shimoga Naga (31) and his associates allegedly attacked Krishna, alias Korangu, who had a history sheet, at a dhaba near Hiriyur, when the latter was being escorted back to Chitradurga after being produced before the court in Bangalore. Deepu, alias Sandeepu, was killed, while Krishna sustained injuries. The Hiriyur police were investigating the case. The Bangalore police and various district police were making efforts to apprehend Shimoga Naga, who was an accused in 31 cases, including four murders and two attempted murders. A number of dacoity, robbery and extortion cases were reported in Bangalore, Nelamangala, Mandya, Madikeri, Shimoga and Chitradurga against him. Shimoga Naga was convicted earlier in a case of robbery that had been reported at the Sadashivanagar Police Station.
