Tanker lorry strike withdrawn

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Owners of tanker lorries withdrew their four-day-long State-wide strike on Sunday evening. This followed talks between the Kerala State Tanker Lorry Owners' Federation and Ernakulam District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish and Motor Vehicles' Department officials.

Forty lorries were seized from different parts of the district during the past two days for restoring fuel supply. The striking owners made the climb-down following four-hour-long talks held here, Mr. Hanish said.

Fourteen representatives of the federation; Deputy Transport Commissioner M.A. Rosamma; Ernakulam Regional Transport Officer (RTO) M.N. Prabhakaran and Joint RTOs of Mattancherry and Perumbavoor participated in the talks. Transport Minister Mathew T. Thomas and Transport Commissioner Ramesh Chandra Bhanu were kept informed from time to time of the progress of the talks. So was Chief Secretary Lizzie Jacob.

The officials who led the talks told the lorry owners about the complicated legal procedures on the issue of fitting speed governors in heavy vehicles.

They spoke to the Supreme Court standing counsel on the issue and told the owners that they could approach the court, seeking 90 more days' time to fit the equipment.
