TIRUCHI: More than two decades after buying houses constructed by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) at Anna Nagar, Navalpattu, only now do the thousands of residents see in the response of the authorities the seriousness to hand over property documents. The sale deed had eluded the house owners, irrespective of whether they had made an outright purchase in 1986 or completed paying the last instalment of loans over the years, due to the non-settlement of the `tender due cost,' an issue concerning the TNHB and the Revenue Department. At long last, the government machinery seems to have paid heed to the repeated representations made by the residents' welfare associations of Anna Nagar, which holds the distinction of coming under the biggest ever scheme of the TNHB. The Assembly Petitions Committee, during its recent visit, heard a petition made on behalf of the residents by G. Arokiaraj, the Convenor of Anna Nagar Welfare Associations Federation, and took cognisance of the plea of the house owners to be spared of making any extra payment towards obtaining the sale deed. Also, the TNHB is understood to have urged the Revenue Department to reduce the land cost in order to expedite the ownership transfer process. Fixing the market rate that prevailed in 2002, the district revenue department has sought payment of Rs. 1.96 crore towards final settlement of land cost for 600 acres of Government poromboke land. The TNHB had paid a token amount of Rs. 6 lakh, at the rate of Rs. 1,000 per acre in 1983. The contention of the residents is: the amount spent by the TNHB towards public utilities should not be passed on to them. Expecting the house owners to bear the financial burden caused owing to the inordinate delay on the part of Government machinery is unreasonable, they feel.
