Andhra in a spot of bother

Tamil Nadu takes 319-run first innings lead

SMART WORK: Andhra's D. Kalyankrishna misses the line, bowled by Vidyut, and is stumped by Varun Kumar.

CHENNAI: Andhra was 79 for one, following on after being dismissed for 155 in its first innings, on the third day of the Ranji Trophy Elite `A' match against Tamil Nadu at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday.

M.S.K. Prasad and L.N.P. Reddy put on 69 before the former top-edged a simple catch to Badrinath; until then Andhra had, against the run of play, looked comfortable.

Tamil Nadu, on its part, failed to exploit the momentum it had generated in dismissing Andhra cheaply in the first innings. The quicks, V. Yomahesh and R. Naresh, didn't make the Andhra batsmen play at the ball enough. Left-arm pacer Naresh, in particular, wasted energy generating bounce so that the ball flew well over the batsman's head. To compound matters, Naresh bowled five no-balls; left-arm spinner S. Vidyut overstepped six times.

Venugopala fails

Earlier, Tamil Nadu did well to dismiss Andhra within three sessions. Resuming at 21 for one, the visitors weren't allowed to settle. First, R. Jesuraj trapped A.S.K. Varma, then Sathish effected a run out from point, to get rid of Gnaneswara Rao. Yomahesh stepped in to dismiss Venugopala Rao, the Andhra captain and batting mainstay, for zero.

M.S.K. Prasad, padding deliberately, was adjudged leg before, although his foot seemed outside the line of the stumps. A.G. Prasad and R.V. Ch Prasad put on a quick 47, but at this stage Andhra would have needed a double century partnership to merely avoid the follow-on.

Tamil Nadu subsequently wrested a 319-run first innings lead; Andhra's weak batting line-up will be hard pressed to survive three more sessions.
