NEW DELHI: Jitender Kumar defeated Nauman Karim of Pakistan 14-6 and entered the quarterfinals of the 51kg class in the 15th Asian Games boxing at the Aspire Hall here on Sunday. Jitender started aggressively to take a 5-1 lead in the first round and was able to dominate after an equal fight in the second of the four rounds. "I was leading in the first round. I took it easy and that is why I was on the backfoot," said Jitender, who had beaten the same opponent on way to the bronze medal in the Melbourne Commonwealth Games. In the 57kg section, Diwakar Prasad beat Mohammed Dmirieh of Syria 20-11 for a place in the quarterfinals. The Indian trailed 7-9 at the halfway stage after a hesitant start but pressed hard in the third and fourth rounds when he collected 13 points to two by his rival.
Paddlers bow out
In table tennis, the Indian pairs bowed out in the mixed doubles event. Sharath Kamal and Poulomi Ghatak lost to the Koreans 6-11, 8-11, 9-11 while Soumyadeep Roy and Mouma Das went down fighting 9-11, 11-8, 3-11, 10-12 to the Singapore pair. In swimming, Arjun Muralidharan was fourth in the 100-metre butterfly heats with a timing of 56.16s. Ankur Poseria was seventh (57.14s) while Virdhaval Khade was third with a timing of 1:54.44 in the 200-metre freestyle heats. There was no progress for India in judo as Anil Kumar was eliminated and the team's woes continued in sepak takra as it went down to Thailand and Myanmar.
