A conspiracy, says Mulayam

LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav on Sunday alleged that the recent desecration of the statue of B.R. Ambedkar in Kanpur was a conspiracy by his political rivals to defame and malign his Government.

"Our opponents have become frustrated and perturbed by the measures taken by the Government for the poor and downtrodden and are hatching conspiracies to defame and malign my Government'', Mr. Yadav said at a function here. He claimed that the law and order situation in the State was ``far better'' than in States like Delhi.

A magisterial inquiry was ordered on Sunday into the alleged desecration and the Senior Superintendent of Police and another police official of the city were put under suspension. PTI
