Education is the tool for empowerment of women, says Chaturvedi

  • `Organise orientation programmes for teachers'
  • `Programmes being taken up to strengthen education'

DHARWAD: Governor T.N. Chaturvedi has said that the development of any nation was possible only when the foundation laid through primary education was strong.

Inaugurating the valedictory function of the centenary celebrations of Government Training Institute for Women, here, on Saturday evening, the Governor said that only quality primary education could bring about the overall development of a person, and thereby develop the nation.

Though not much importance was given to primary education during the post-independence era, the governments have now realised its importance and were implementing programmes to strengthen primary education, he said.

Mr. Chaturvedi said education was the main tool for empowerment of women. The institute, set up a century ago, had contributed to the empowerment of women through the medium of education, and also to the development of the education, he said.

He stressed on the need for organising orientation programmes for teachers after every five years. He also felicitated five former superintendents of the institute on the occasion.

Releasing the souvenir "Vidyadayini", Primary and Secondary Education Minister Basavaraj Horatti said he was alarmed at the falling standards in primary education.

He said several measures have been taken up by the Government to improve the quality of primary education in the State.

Mr. Horatti said steps had been taken to ensure that there would be no dearth of teachers from the next academic year.

About 6,000 teachers had been trained to implement the Government's decision of making English language compulsory from First standard, he said.

Revenue and district in-charge Minister Jagadish Shettar assured of assistance from the Government for the development of the institute.

Former Minister S.R. Morey presided over the function.
