  • `Education can make women self-reliant'

HUBLI: Maintaining accountability while using funds donated by philanthropists and governments goes a long way in the development of an institution, Governor T.N. Chaturvedi has said.

He was speaking after inaugurating the birth centenary celebration of Gandhian Nagamma Viranagouda Patil, founder of Mahila Vidyapeeth, and the new building of Manoramadevi Jugalkishor Somani Degree College, here on Sunday.

The accountability leads to cooperation from the society and coordination between individuals and organisations, which would influence the growth of the institute, he said.

Recalling the contributions of Ms. Patil and Sardar Viranagouda Patil, who founded the Harijan Balikashrama,Mr. Chaturvedi said the institutions established by them spoke about the ideal qualities and values they stood for. "When we organise any programme in their memory, we do not just remember them; we remember the values they stood for and that guides us to follow the ideal path treaded by them," he said.

Mr. Chaturvedi said through the establishment of Harijan Balikashram 70 years ago, they sowed the seed of empowerment of women through education.

Self-reliance was the need of the hour for women and that could be achieved only through education, he said. Role of institutes such as Mahila Vidyapeeth, which help women become economically independent, was crucial, he added. Mr. Chaturvedi also called on the officials and Ministers concerned, to rectify the lacunae in "Sarva Shiksha Abhiyana" to make the programme more effective.

Revenue Minister Jagadish Shettar lauded the contributions of Mahila Vidyapeetha in empowering women belonging to the lower strata of the society. Mr. Shettar released "Avva", a book on Ms. Patil.

Presiding over the function, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Basavaraj Horatti said the Government was spending Rs. 6,000 crore for improvement of primary and secondary education in the State. He said the Government had taken up construction of 485 high schools in the State this year and 436 of them were in rural areas.

The Governor felicitated philanthropists who had extended financial assistance to the vidyapeeth. Pralhad Joshi, MP; A.M. Hindasageri, former Minister; Patil Puttappa, veteran journalist; Basantkumar Patil, film producer, and B.S. Patil, former Chief Secretary to Government, were present.
