Token fast observed over Omalur violence

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI : Speakers at the day-long token fast observed here to condemn the attack on the Fathima Girls Higher Secondary School premises in Omalur, Salem district, following the death of a girl student, urged the State government to provide adequate protection to the minority institutions and its administrators.

Addressing the members of Tamil Nadu Catholic Church in which teachers, priests among others participated, Madras-Mylapore Archbishop A M Chinnappa said the fast was an expression of solidarity. He hoped that the government and its officials would render justice and ensure safety to the institutions at least in future.

Appeal to members

He appealed to the members to remain calm and not to get carried away by reports that appeared in a section of the media.

Earlier, the speakers condemned the Omalur police for their lethargic attitude, which led to the attack by miscreants on the school. Among those who addressed the gathering were Madras-Mylapore Auxiliary Bishop Lawrence Pius, Catholic Religious of India (CRI) Madras-Mylapore president Suja, Parish priest Lawrence Raj, Archdiocesan Pastoral Council secretary C Antony and Christian coordinator Immanuel.
