CHENNAI: Kumaresan Selvan, a 13-year-old resident of a fishing hamlet in Foreshore Estate was yet another tsunami victim. But what is commendable is his resolute spirit to win over the tides that devoured his belongings two years ago. He was awarded with the `Young Achiever Award' by the Rotary Club of Madras on Tuesday last for his positive attitude and spirit of adventure despite personal loss. Kumaresan, an eighth standard student at the St. Lazarus Middle School at Santhome, topped the competition that had 15 contestants from across the country. He had also won the national sailing competition at Pune in October.
"Thrilling experience"
Asked about his experience at sea, Kumaresan said it was thrilling as it was the first contest that he participated in. "I had put in my best. But the first prize at the national level came as a happy surprise as I did not expect to win," he said. He was one among 10 youngsters of the fishing community chosen by the Tamil Nadu Sailing Association for training. "I have never sailed till I was chosen for training," said Kumaresan who underwent vigorous training for three years.
Aiming high
"I want to achieve the international level in sailing," said Kumaresan who is aiming at winning the sailing competition at Chennai during May. Ravi Katari, president of Rotary Club of Madras, presented the award comprising a citation and a trophy to Kumaresan. Nandita Krishnan, director of the vocational service of the club, said he was chosen for the award for his achievement and adventurous nature that led him to shed his inhibitions and fear. A career guidance fair to be hosted by the club in January was also discussed at the meeting.
