Seeking clergy's help to spread awareness

Shujaat Bukhari

A right cause: Jamiat chairman

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir AIDS Preventive and Control Society has sought the help of Imams to create awareness about AIDS. Leading the way is Moulana Showkat Ahmad Shah, chairman of the Jamiat Ahle Hadees, who is nowadays busy lecturing his fellow Imams, who have taken it on to themselves to spread awareness, about the disease. .

At a training programme, organised by the AIDS control society and the Jamiat on World AIDS Day, the Moulana asked his fellow Imams to take up the responsibility to save their nation from the menace.

"To curb the spread of this disease, Imams need both religious and medical instruction so that they can combine the two in their sermons. That is why we thought it best to cooperate with the AIDS Control Society in organising this training programme," the Moulana told The Hindu . Quoting the Quran and the Hadith he asked the Imams to deliberate upon the issue.

Though the prevalence of AIDS is lesser in Kashmir compared to other parts of the country, most of the afflicted are in the Jammu region.

In Srinagar 100 such cases have been detected.

The coordination between the Society and the Jamiat is likely to take the message to the grassroots level.
