COIMBATORE: A peer education and training programme was organised for rural children by the PSG Rural Health Centre at Vedapatti. The programmes were organised in connection with the World AIDS Day, observed on December 1. Around 100 Plus Two students from rural schools participated in it.
On AIDS prevention
Experts on AIDS prevention and counselling explained to the students the nature of the disease, the ways in which it spread and the methods by which it could be prevented. The three basic aspects of prevention, which included abstinence from unprotected sex, being faithful to one's partner and the use of condoms were discussed. Each student who attended the programme was asked to take up the role of a peer educator and spread the message to the rest of the students in their schools and neighbourhood. K.Parameswaran, Field Publicity Officer, Coimbatore, inaugurated the programme. Dr.Mahadevan, In-Charge of the Department of Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, Dr.Vignesh of the Rural Health Centre and Professor Neelaveni of PSG College of Pharmacy, spoke to students on the relationship between alcohol, drugs and HIV/AIDS. The two-day interactive programme also included short skits performed by the students on the need to keep away from bad habits. S.Usha Rani of K.K.Naidu HSS and A.Anandam of Kasturba Gandhi Centre, Varadarajapuram, led the discussions on the final day of the programme.
