Bangalore: Science should be given more importance in government schools. This was the focus at "Disha - 2006", an awareness initiative of a software company, Synopsys, and a non-governmental organisation, Friends of Children, involving around 140 government school children, at the St. Teresa's Girls' High School on Saturday. The science exhibition, conducted by 40 government schools, stressed the need to promote science and technology projects in schools, which are deprived of such facilities. "These students are the future of our country. We want them to understand the basic principles of science before it is too late," said Ravi Vattipalli, engineering project leader, Synopsys. Judges Shyam Vasudeva Rao, principal engineer, Philips, and Visweswara Mundkur, architect, Centrillian, discussed how science and technology played a significant role in accelerating development in energy-starved regions. They said that while it was important to create awareness in schools, one should also make an effort to get the students view these subjects as a viable source of information. "It is a good forum to demonstrate their innovations. Conventional energy sources are depleting day by day. If we create awareness among our children, they will definitely provide a solution," said Mr. Mundkur. The excitement in the packed auditorium was palpable, with 59 teams contesting for the honours. The teams showcased their models and projects on electromagnetic induction, pinwheel rocket, rainwater harvesting and tidal energy.
Winners
The team from Government PU college, Malleswaram, was announced the winner, while Viveka Triable Centre, Vasahalli, and Government High School, Hebbal, were judged runners-up and second runners-up respectively. The winners will get to participate in an all-expense paid three-week summer camp, which will be held in April.
