BANGALORE: Karnataka State Pollution Control Board Chairman H.C. Sharatchandra lamented the lack of awareness in many industries about chemicals and safety measures. This was making the industries disaster-prone and causing hazards to people staying around. Mr. Sharatchandra was speaking at a seminar on "Disaster prevention, planning and emergency response in hazardous industries." The seminar was organised by the Karnataka State Safety Institute and the Department of Factories and Boilers on Sunday. Mr. Sharatchandra said the industries here lacked the basic technology for detection of the effects of chemicals and take safety measures. Safety measures were not a priority among the industries, he said. H. Srinivasaiah, Director, Department of Factories and Boilers, said the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests was evolving measures to prevent leakage of hazardous gases. N.
