Liquor sales: election panel writes to Chief Secretary

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Election Commission on Sunday expressed concern over "unusual high sales" and diversion of liquor to the Chamundeshwari constituency and directed the Government to tighten up the enforcement mechanism there.

In a letter to the Chief Secretary, the Election Commission said reports suggested that unusual high sales were made to six retail outlets in Bangalore, which disposed of the stocks within 24 hours. "However, no receipts for having sold the stocks were available," it said.

`One lorry'

"Except in one case, all other consignments had been moved in one lorry. It is not feasible that five consignments containing 1,250 boxes were transported in a lorry," the commission said.

"This could have been diverted as consignments of liquor have been seized in Mysore, where the Model Code of Conduct is in operation, and the possibility of tracing this seizure to the above sales cannot be ruled out," it said.

The commission directed the Government to ensure tracing of the seized liquor to its original sales and fix responsibility and completely tighten up the processes of enforcement to prevent diversion of liquor into the constituency.
