HYDERABAD: Come Monday, when you visit a restaurant or shopping mall near an intersection, make sure that you park your vehicle in the prescribed parking place and not on the road lest you may land in trouble. The traffic police have declared 11 busy junctions in the heart of the city as `tow away' zones and motorists have to park their vehicles 50 metres away from the junction in all directions to ensure smooth flow of traffic. The junctions are: Ameerpet, Punjagutta, Khairatabad, Nagarjuna Circle, Greenlands, Rajiv Gandhi statue at Somajiguda, Raj Bhavan, Rasoolpura, Lakdikapul, M.J. Market and Nampally. "Vehicles will be seized if anyone is found violating the rule," Additional Commissioner (Traffic) A.K. Khan told reporters here on Sunday. He said the MCH had been asked to erect the necessary signboards at these junctions urging people not to park their vehicles in the 50-metre radius. A study conducted by the traffic police had revealed that traffic snarls had become the order of the day at these junctions due to haphazard parking of vehicles. Some motorists were parking their vehicles on the main road itself in front of shopping complexes leaving little space for other road users.
20,000 cases booked
Over 20,000 cases were booked every month for parking of vehicles in the no-parking zone. "The number showcases as to how bad Hyderabadis adhere to traffic rules," Mr. Khan said, adding that eight new cranes would be acquired soon in addition to the 13 vehicles to tow away vehicles parked in the new tow away zones.
