Letters to the Editor
It is shocking that despite the precarious condition of the road overbridge and the caution voiced by workers, the engineers permitted the Howrah-Jamalpur Express to pass under it (Dec. 3). Instead of providing succour to the families of the dead and the injured, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's reaction to the tragedy was inappropriate. He should try to emulate the example set by Lal Bahadur Shastri as published in "Shastri explains" (This Day That Age, Dec. 2).
Bulusu Hanumantha Rao,
Negligence on the part of Railway authorities is the main cause for the accident, which has claimed 37 lives. The slow pace of the rescue operations only added to the scale of the tragedy. Railway Minister Lalu Prasad should ensure more budgetary allocations for safety measures.
Train accidents seem to have become a routine affair with the Indian Railways. It is all the more shameful that the accident occurred in the Railway Minister's home State of Bihar.
Both Mr. Lalu Prasad and Mr. Nitish Kumar seem to be indulging in a blame game. Such accidents can be prevented only when politics takes a back seat to development issues.
Shailesh Kumar,
