Charge referred to Election Commission

Staff Reporter

THIRUVAMBADI: Kozhikode District Collector B. Srinivas, who is also the District Election Officer, said here on Monday that a report based on the allegations that Minister for Industries Elamaram Karim and Tirur MLA P. P. Abdullakutty had violated the election model code of conduct had been forwarded to the Election Commission.

The activists of the United Democratic Front (UDF) reportedly blocked Mr. Karim and Mr. Abdulla on Sunday for allegedly canvassing votes for Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate George M. Thomas on Sunday.

All electioneering activities officially had come to a halt at 5 p.m. on Saturday. The District Collector had also issued orders asking outsiders campaigning in the constituency to leave Thiruvambadi. "We have taken a note of the allegations and have sent a report to the higher authorities. It was up to the Election Commission to take any action based on the report," Mr. Srinivas said.

He said similar reports had also been forwarded to the Election Commission on the allegations that some of the UDF leaders were staying back in the Assembly segment on Sunday.

Senior poll officials said the commission would order a detailed inquiry to see if Mr. Karim had breached the election model code of conduct.
