Dalits protest against Khairlanji killings

Belgaum: Activists of various Dalit organisations in the district staged demonstrations on Monday to protest against the Khairlanji killings in Maharashtra.

The demonstration was organised in response to the State-wide protest call to oppose "increasing atrocities" on Dalits in different parts of the country, and to condemn the killing of Dalit family members in Khairlanji last month. They said the State administration tends to remain a mute spectator to Dalit atrocities. There was no protection for Dalits even after almost 60 years of independence, they said.

The protesters took out a procession from Ambedkar garden and staged a rasta roko at Rani Chennamma circle. Various Dalit organisation leaders, including Mallesh Kurangi, M.R. Kalpatri, Muni Yellappa, Babu Pujari, Laxman Satrannavar, Manohar Muchandi, Anand Kolkar, , R.K. Chaluvadi and Ashok Inavar participated in the protest.
