THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A garden of medicinal plants will be set up on the Karyavattom campus of the University of Kerala as part of its ongoing `Suvarna Keralam' celebrations. In the first phase, medicinal plants used in Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani streams of treatment will be planted. The plants will be grouped according to their use in specific medicines. For instance, the medicinal plants used to prepare `Dasamoolarishtam' or say `Chyavanaprasam' will be planted together. There will be provision to display the scientific details of each herb and tree. Apart from this, herbs used in the preparation of traditional medicines and those useful in treating blood pressure, heart and liver-related diseases, among others, will also be planted in the garden. The garden will come up in front of the Department of Geology in the first phase. This was decided at a meeting chaired by Vice-Chancellor M.K. Ramachandran Nair on Monday. Head of the Department of Botany G.M. Nair told the meeting that in the second phase, a `Nakshatra vanam' would be set up. Trees corresponding to the 27 astrological stars (Ashwathy to Revathy) would be planted here. The garden would be maintained by the department. The university also has plans to plant a large number of other herbs and plants as part of a `Goodbye Acacia' programme, said a press note issued here on Monday.
