dated December 6, 1956: Chou En-lai in Madras

Citizens of Madras accorded an enthusiastic welcome to the Chinese Prime Minister, Mr. Chou En-lai, and the Vice-Premier, Marshal Ho Lung, when they arrived in Madras on December 5, on a two-day visit. The Meenambakkam airport, where they were given an official reception, and the approach roads leading to it were tastefully decorated with welcome arches and streamers, displaying slogans of greeting and welcome. Mr. Chou En-lai, dressed in the Chinese Marshal's suit, emerged from the plane and was greeted at the steps by Mr. Sri Prakasa, Governor, and Mr. M. Bhaktavatsalam, Minister for Agriculture, who deputised for the Chief Minister, now away in Delhi.
