Hubli-Dharwad
Staff Correspondent
DHARWAD: Hubli-Dharwad district administration has suspended the procurement of onions following a Government Order. Last week, the Government ordered suspension of the procurement of onions temporarily for 10 days in a step aimed at helping district administrations to clear onion stock at the procurement centres. Deputy Commissioner M.S. Srikar said following the Government Order, all the three procurement centres in the district at Annigeri, Amargol and Navalgund would remain closed till further orders from the Government. He appealed to the farmers not to bring their produce to the procurement centres especially the Annigeri centre, where there was a large stock of onions. Meanwhile, rain in the last few days has damaged onion stored on the premises of the procurement centres. Onions have started sprouting because of moisture. According to an estimate, one lakh quintals of onion have been affected because of the rain. The district administration has sold six lakh quintals of onions to various markets in neighbouring States, including Andhra Pradesh and Kerala.
