COIMBATORE: The Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Staff Welfare Association of Bharathiar University has urged that the safeguards and protective measures provided to them under the Indian Constitution, be included in the general laws of the University also. According to a release from the secretary of the Association, there was a demand for inclusion of certain percentage of SC/ST teaching staff of `A' and `B' divisions and non-teaching staff in the University Senate and Syndicate to ensure equal representation. It has also demanded for a permanent UGC SC/ST Cell to be formed.
Appointments
Reservation of seats, appointments and promotions should be based on the Government regulations that were being changed from time to time. Reservation should be made applicable for research degrees like M. Phil and Ph. D. The Association has also put forth the demand that SC/ST candidates should be given chance to be Vice-Chancellor and Registrar on a rotation basis. As in the case of Government service, promotions and direct recruitments could be in the ratio of 1:2. Designations for non-teaching should be made uniform and should be given a pay scale on a par with University of Madras at Chennai. These demands have been submitted by the Association to the University for favourable consideration.
