Coimbatore: The Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) personnel of the Coimbatore Rural district on Tuesday made a huge haul of rectified spirit. Following a tip-off, the PEW police personnel raided a farm at Kulathupalayampudur near Negamam and seized 229 cans of rectified spirit meant for transportation to Kerala. The value of the seized spirit was estimated to be around Rs. 13 lakh. The police have also taken into custody eight persons on charges of possessing and trading in rectified spirit.
Constable found dead
Balan (53) a constable attached to the crime wing of the Big Bazzar police station limits in the city was found dead under suspicious circumstances in the kitchen of his house at Thomas Park housing unit at Race Course on Tuesday.
Activists removed
As many as eight activists of the Periyar Dravida Kazhagam were removed by the police when they attempted to stage a demonstration on Avinashi Road on Tuesday in protest against the alleged objectionable remarks by Swami Dayananda Saraswathi over the issue of installation of the statue of EVR Periyar near Srirangam Temple in Tiruchi.
