UNI sale figures in Rajya Sabha

NEW DELHI: A demand was made in the Rajya Sabha for Government intervention to stop the sale of majority shares in the United News of India to a private television channel.

Raising the matter through a special mention, Ali Anwar (Janata Dal-United) said, "it is a matter of concern that while the agency was set up to break the monopoly of news, a private firm is trying to recreate a monopolistic situation in news after 40 years."

Political parties have written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the sale. The UNI employees have been agitating against the sale for the last two months. The agency, set up in 1961 under Section 25 of the Companies Act, was meant to run on a cooperative model, Mr. Anwar said.

Several CPI (M) MPs, including Brinda Karat, associated themselves with the JD (U) member's views. — PTI
