CHENNAI: Students of dental colleges can now look forward to an increased income when they graduate. The Dental Council of India had expressed concern that the graduates were not being paid well for their skills. Following this, a law asking that appointed undergraduates be paid Rs.10,000 as salary has been proposed, said Anil Kohli, President of the Dental Council of India. Also, interns working in various dental colleges should be paid a stipend compulsorily, he said. Dr. Kohli, who inaugurated a national BDS students seminar on oral medicine and radiology on Sunday said if the students had a problem or a dispute with the management of a college where they were interning or were appointed they could approach the council directly. The council is firm that every college should fit the basic requirements of the council for conducting the course. Keeping this in mind the curriculum and the syllabus were revised, he said. N. Gnanasundaram, organising chairman, said 1,100 delegates from various dental colleges across the country participated in the programme. A total of 171 papers were presented and 117 posters exhibited. A quiz was also held. N.M. Veeraiyan, Chancellor of Saveetha University, released a handbook titled `Mouth is the mirror of the body', authored by Dr. Gnanasundaram. As many as 85 students were honoured with awards and certificates of merit. The seminar was organised by the Indian Academy of Oral Medicine and Radiology and Saveetha University.
