New building at Students' Home

Chennai: The centenary building of the Ramakrishna Mission Students Home, Mylapore, will be inaugurated by Atmasthanandaji, vice president, Ramakrishna Math and Mission, on Wednesday. The building, constructed at a cost of Rs 3.68 crore, will house classrooms, laboratories and workshops for the new courses offered by the polytechnic, which forms part of the Home, a release here said. — Special Correspondent

60 injured as buses collide

Cuddalore: At least 60 passengers were injured when two buses collided at Anguchettipalyam near Panruti on Tuesday. Of them, about 20 are students. They have been admitted to government hospitals at Panruti and Cuddalore. The police said the State Transport Corporation bus proceeding from Cuddalore to Salem, and a private bus on its way from Kallakurichi to Cuddalore were involved in the accident. The drivers of both the buses — Ilangovan and Mohammad Yakub — too were injured. It is stated that when the private bus drove over the coconut husk spread on the road for drying, the driver lost control and hit against the oncoming bus. — Special Correspondent

Telecom staff to join nationwide strike

CHENNAI: Chennai Telephones employees owing allegiance to the National Federation of Telecom Employees and National Telecommunication Staff Union will participate in the nationwide strike call given by the central trade unions on December 14. The strike has been called in support of the 16-point charter of demands, including protection of public sector enterprises. As part of the strike, members of the two unions will hold a demonstration in front of the Anna Road Head Post Office, the circle secretary of NFTE-BSNL C.K. Mathivanan and circle secretary of NTSU-BSNL D. Rajendran said in a release. — Special Correspondent

Dravidar Kazhagam plea

CHENNAI: The Dravidar Kazhagam on Tuesday called for greater coordination between the State Government and judiciary on making Tamil the official language of the Madras High Court expeditiously.

In a statement, K. Veeramani, president, said the work relating to the creation of the needed infrastructure could be taken up smoothly through exchange of views and mutual understanding. He pointed out that Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had addressed several issues concerning the judiciary in a meeting with the Chief Justice. — Special Correspondent

EB staff stage fast

CHENNAI: The Central Organisation of Tamil Nadu Electricity Employees (COTEE) on Tuesday staged fast in Chennai in support of its demands on regularisation of contract labourers in the Electricity Board. Led by the president S. Pancharatnam, members of the union urged the State Government to regularise the services of about 21,000 labourers in the Board. They called for abolition of the scheme of consolidated wages for 2,500 labourers who were taken in as trainee mazdoor last year. The CPI(M) legislature party leader, C. Govindasamy, concluded the fast. — Special Correspondent

Washed away

ERODE: A 21-year-old youth from Tirupur was washed away in the LBP canal here on Monday. According to the police, Jaffer Sadiq and his friend Umar came to Bhavanisagar on Monday to buy fish. While returning, they had their bath in the Lower Bhavani Project canal. Jaffer Sadiq was washed away in the water. His body was recovered near Thingalure. - Staff Reporter

Seized

OMALUR: Two persons were arrested for unauthorised possession of country-made guns here on Tuesday. The police said that following a tip-off, a team of personnel raided the houses of Mathesh (45) and Uthirappan (67), residents of the Kadaiyampatti, and seized the guns. — Staff Reporter

Burgled

SALEM: A few unidentified men broke open three houses and decamped with cash and valuables at Indira Nagar on Yercaud Road here on Monday. The police said that they had stolen Rs. 4,800 and a mobile phone from a house where two students of the private law college were staying. They had also stolen cash and valuables from two nearby houses belonging to Ashokan, a mechanic, and Saileshwari, a doctor. — Staff Reporter

Cyclist killed

Tuticorin : M. Shunmugam (55) was killed when a lorry allegedly hit the cycle he was riding here on Monday.

The police said the accident took place on Tuticorin-Tiruchendur State Highway.

While the rider died on the spot, the pillion rider, C. Rajendran, was admitted to hospital.

Liquor bottles seized

Tuticorin : The police arrested S. Sundar (29) at Tiruchendur on Monday on a charge of illegal possession of brandy and whisky bottles.

In all, 20 bottles were seized from the accused. According to the police, Sub-Inspector Abraham Cruz, who was on patrol duty, found him moving under suspicious circumstances.

On questioning it was found that he had possesses the bottles without proper permit.

He was remanded to judicial custody.

Aluminium wire stolen

Tuticorin : The police are on the lookout for some unidentified persons who had allegedly stolen aluminium wire from a power distribution line at Thonugal near here recently.

The Kovilpatti West police launched an investigation into the incident based on a complaint lodged by Tamil Nadu Electricity Board officials that 1,650-metre wire, worth Rs.12,700, was missing.

Free medical camp

Nagercoil : A free medical camp organised by Human Education and Liberation, a non-governmental organisation at Pallam, a coastal village in Kanyakumari district, evoked a good response.

More than 750 persons belonging to 16 villages got treatment.

Lawyer attacked

Tirunelveli : Mariappan (33), a lawyer, was attacked by a man at Cheranmahadevi, owing to previous enmity.

The lawyer was admitted to Tirunelveli Medical College and Hospital with severe stab injuries. — Staff Reporter

CPI(M) demonstration

PUDUKOTTAI: Communist Party of India (Marxist) cadres staged a demonstration here on Tuesday protesting price rise. They urged the Central and State governments to take immediate action to check the rise in prices.

DMDK to launch campaign

PUDUKOTTAI: The Youth wing of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) will launch campaign this month to propagate the party's ideology.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level at the Mettur dam stood at 114.52 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Tuesday. The inflow was 4,201 cusecs and the discharge 15,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter
