Fiji: India `saddened'

Diplomatic Correspondent

NEW DELHI: ``We are saddened to learn about the turn of events in Fiji and hope that the rule of law will prevail and power will be returned to the people at the earliest," an External Affairs Ministry spokesman said in a statement on Tuesday.

Reacting to the ouster of Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase by the Fijian military, the spokesman added in a two-line response, ``India greatly values its relations with the Republic of Fiji Islands, a country with which we share cultural and historical links.''

The Indian response neither uses the term ``military coup'' for the acts of Fiji's military nor does it talk of the return of political power to Mr. Qarase. It speaks of power being returned to the ``people'' of Fiji.
