COLOMBO: Sri Lankan Army (SLA) claimed to have killed 16 LTTE cadres in the east in retaliatory attacks that also left two soldiers dead. The Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) said the fighting began in the LTTE controlled Vaharai region of Batticaloa district on Monday and sporadic firing continued on Tuesday. Separately, the police said Tamil Tigers shot dead two civilians in Vavuniya in the north. In addition, a roadside bomb blast blamed on the rebels wounded two Government-appointed security guards in the northern Anuradhapura district. TamilNet claimed that two of SLA troopers were killed and 19 injured in a clash between the SLA and the LTTE at the Tigers held Katumurivu area in Batticaloa district. In another development, the Leader of the Opposition Ranil Wickremesinghe called on President Mahinda Rajapaksa and exchanged views on the current situation.
New Indian envoy
Meanwhile, the newly appointed Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Alok Prasad visited the Foreign Office in preparation for the credentials ceremony to be held at the Presidential Palace at a date to be decided. Mr. Alok Prasad, until recently High Commissioner to Singapore, arrived here on December 3 to take up his new assignment.
