More films likely to get subsidy

Number may be increased to 30 from 20

  • Doddarange Gowda panel formed to select films
  • The chosen films get a subsidy of Rs. 10 lakh each

BANGALORE: The Government is reportedly under pressure to consider 30 films for the annual subsidy of Rs. 10 lakh each instead of 20 films as announced in the State Budget for 2006-07. According to sources in the Kannada cinema industry and the Government, the Doddarange Gowda Committee formed to select films for subsidy is likely to recommend that the Government consider 30 films, the sources said.

The Government is considering bringing in policy changes to ensure the promotion of quality and creativity, according to sources.

Despite the Government's generous gestures, the industry has been pestering the Government with new sets of demands each year despite its dismal performance.

Although Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy is sympathetic to the problems being faced by the industry, he wants it to be self-sufficient. Even Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Ambareesh, an actor himself, has said that the Kannada cinema industry should become self-reliant and command respect from the Government, the sources say.
