Bangalore: The Department of Youth Services and Sports has invited applications for the Ekalavya Awards. Entrance test for PG courses

Belgaum: The KLE Academy of Higher Education and Research will be conducting an all-India entrance test on January 21 in Belgaum, Bangalore, Pune, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Kolkata for admission to medical and dental postgraduate courses (2007-08).

Details can be had from the website www.kahe.edu.in. Online submission of applications must be made by 5 p.m. on December 26, according to KAHE Registrar P.F. Kotur.

Postal workers to join strike

Bangalore: About 35,000 postal employees in Karnataka Circle will join the strike on December 14 to protest the "anti-employee policies" of the Union Government. The strike has been called by the Confederation of Central Government Employees and the National Federation of Postal Employees.

The unions have asked for all vacant posts to be filled, the new pension scheme to be dropped, granting interim from January 1, 2006 and implementation of the 6th Pay Commission recommendations from the same date, among other things. — Special Correspondent

Lokayukta police trap hospital official

BANGALORE: The Lokayukta police on Monday caught Jyothi, secretary, Mandya District Hospital, while she was allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs. 4,000.

According to a press release from the Lokayukta here, Ms. Jyothi had demanded a bribe of Rs. 4,000 from Anil Kumar for preparing a bill of Rs. 1.05 lakh that was due to him for supplying food to patients at the hospital. On a complaint by Anil Kumar, the Lokayukta police laid a trap and caught Ms. Jyothi while she was accepting the bribe from him, the release said. — Staff Reporter

Athawale's arrest condemned

Bangalore: M. Venkata-swamy, president of the State unit of the Republican Party of India, has condemned the arrest of the national president of the party, Ramdas Athawale, MP, at the Nagpur airport and criticised the action taken by the Maharashtra Government.

In a press release, he has said that by denying permission to Dalit organisations to conduct a rally to protest the murder of four Dalits at Khairlanji, the Maharashtra Government was doing injustice to all Dalits. Mr. Venkataswamy said the party would conduct a Statewide agitation if Mr. Athawale was not released immediately. — Staff Reporter

Revanna lauds BJP for backing JD(S)

HASSAN: Minister for Public Works and Energy H.D. Revanna has lauded the Bharatiya Janata Party for cooperating with the Janata Dal (Secular) in the Chamundeshwari byelection. Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, he refuted suggestions that BJP leaders had not campaigned for the JD(S) candidate.

He expressed confidence that JD(S) candidate Shivabasappa would win the byelection by a large margin. The JD(S) took the election as a challenge when Congress candidate Siddaramaiah declared said that there was no candidate in the JD(S) to contest against him, he added. — Staff Correspondent

MCI team to visit Hassan college

HASSAN: A Medical Council of India team will visit the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences for inspection in February next year. Before the visit, the number of beds in the Government District Hospital will be increased from 250 to 500 and in next phase it would be increased to 1,000 beds, Minister for Public Works and Energy and district in-charge H.D. Revanna said. Earlier, Mr. Revanna held review meeting in his home constituency Holenarsipur. He recalled that when H.D. Deve Gowda was Chief Minister he approved a proposal to increase the bed strength to 500. — Staff Correspondent

Protest by cane growers continues

BELLARY: The dharna by cane growers in and around Hospet, under the banner of Hospet Raitha Sangha, demanding a higher procurement price for sugarcane entered its second day on Tuesday. The growers locked the IRS sugar factory to register their protest against the failure of the company to concede to their demands. Gosala Bharmappa, treasurer of the sangha, told The Hindu that the cane had demanded Rs. 1,300 per ton as against the Rs. 1,110 per ton announced by the factory. — Staff Correspondent

Two drown

MYSORE: Two persons drowned in the Cauvery at Talakad in T. Narsipur near here on Saturday. According to reports reaching here, the deceased persons were identified as Vidyavikas Agarwal (38) and Raghavendra, both residents of K.R. Puram in Bangalore. They had come to Talakad on a picnic, police said. — Staff Correspondent

Training for teachers

MYSORE: The University of Mysore is holding a short-term training programme in biotechnology for college teachers engaged in teaching life sciences and biotechnology at the undergraduate level. The three-week programme, which began last week at the Department of Studies in Applied Botany and Biotechnology at Manasagangothri, will conclude on December 21. During the programme, hands-on training is being provided in advanced cell and molecular biological techniques through special and invited lectures.

Power shutdown

HUBLI: Owing to work on charging underground power cable network the following areas in Hubli will have no power supply on Sunday and Wednesday between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., Hubli Electricity Supply Company has said in a release.

The areas affected are Sarafkatta, MG Market, Akki Honda, Shilvantara Oni, Badiger Oni, Bhoospet, Desai Oni, Settlement, Mangalvarpet, Durgadabail and surrounding areas.

Education adalat

DHARWAD: Primary and Secondary Education Minister Basavaraj Horatti will chair the "Education Adalat" on December 9 at 1.30 p.m. at the District Institute of Education Training (DIET) premises in Dharwad.

The general public have been requested to submit their grievances and complaints in advance to the office of the Additional Commissioner of Department of Public Instruction, Dharwad. A copy of the complaint/grievance should be sent to the Minister at Adaveshwar Sadan, Pinto Road, Hubli, a release said. — Staff Correspondent

DHARWAD: Onkar Bhagavat, Yashaswini Gopal Joshi, Balachandra Talikoti and Sanganagouda Handral have been declared winners of the quiz contest held as part of "Dharwad Utsav" recently.

Around 150 students had participated in the quiz. In a release, the Deputy Commissioner has said that a prize distribution ceremony would be organised in Dharwad. The date of the ceremony would be informed to the winners. — Staff Correspondent

Congress not for early polls in Goa

PANAJI: The Congress party on Tuesday ruled out the possibility of going for an early election in the State.

At a meeting of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP), held at the residence of the Chief Minister Pratapsingh Rane on Tuesday, the view of a faction of MLAs that the party should favour an early election was vetoed by the majority of MLAs led by the Chief Minister.

The issue of early polls had surfaced in view of the controversy regarding the upcoming panchayat elections. — Special Correspondent
