Ward delimitation

Thiruvananthapuram: The delimitation of the wards of the Mattannur municipality in Kannur district in preparation to the elections to be held there in September has begun. Chairman of the Delimitation Committee P. Kamalkutty said here on Tuesday that the number of wards would be increased from 28 to 31 based on Census 2001. He added that a meeting of the representatives of recognised political parties would be held in the Kannur Collectorate on December 8 to explain to them the norms of the ward delimitation. - Special Correspondent

Awards for scientists

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Scientists of Central Tuber Crops Research Institute (CTCRI) here bagged four awards at the 14th International Symposium on Tropical Tuber Crops held here last week, said institution director S. Edison in a press release on Tuesday. The CTCRI scientists who won the awards are: M. Anantharaman (best oral presentation on transfer technology), M.N. Sheela (best presentation on research on yams) and Lila Babu (best presentation on Vita-A aspects of sweet potato). Dr. Sheela also won the award for the best poster paper presentation on diversity in yams. — Special Correspondent

Kisan Sabha march

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Activists of the Communist Party of India-led All India Kisan Sabha staged a march to the headquarters of the Kerala State Cooperative Bank here on Tuesday to press for waiver of farm loans up to Rs.1 lakh, suspension of revenue recovery measures against debt-ridden farmers and reduction of interest on farm loans to 4 per cent.

Spirit seized

PALAKKAD: The Alathur police seized 12,215 litres of spirit and arrested four persons for smuggling it in a lorry covered with plywood sheets. The spirit was seized near Mangalam bridge at Alathur on Tuesday by a police party led by Alathur Deputy Superintendent of Police Vijayan. The police took the lorry and a Tata Sumo car escorting the smuggled spirit into custody. They have also arrested the lorry driver and three persons escorting it. The arrested persons are lorry driver Ramesh, son of Velayudhan of Kallukuttiyal near here, his neighbour Satheesh and Abdul Rasak and Jayadasan of Athikode near Chittur. They were produced in the Court . — Staff Reporter

Nursing course

KOLLAM: The Sree Niketan Helpline for Women and Girls is organising free courses in practical nursing and first aid, laboratory technology, home nursing, hospital bystander and psychiatric nursing. Those aged between 16 and 50 can apply for the course, which is being conducted in association with the Union Social Welfare Minister, Indian Red Cross Society and the Saint John's Ambulance. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Fort police have arrested a 42-year-old woman on the charge of peddling drugs. The police identified the accused as Fathima Beevi, a resident of Manacaud. — Staff Reporter

KGOU district conference

ALAPPUZHA: The 21st annual district conference of the Kerala Gazetted Officers' Union (KGOU) would be held at Raiban Auditorium on December 8. Union district president P. Pushparajan and district secretary C.R. Ravishankar said the district committee meeting would begin at 10.15 a.m. K.C. Venugopal, MLA, would inaugurate the delegates' meeting at 2 p.m. New office-bearers of the district committee would be elected in the evening. — Staff Reporter

ABVP protest

KOZHIKODE: The Higher Education Commission formed by the Government, with Dr. K.N. Panikkar as chairman, should be dismissed as it was targeted at `controlling educational institutions,' ABVP State secretary V.P. Rajeevan said. Talking to reporters here, Mr. Rajeevan and ABVP joint-secretary P. Sudheer said the decision to form the Commission without consulting the academic community revealed the `haughtiness of the Government.' The ABVP would observe Ambedkar Memorial Day as Social Equity Day (December 6) in all education institutions and December 13 Parliament attack anniversary day as anti-terrorism day. - Staff Reporter

Special training for bus drivers

KOCHI: A special training programme will be given to bus drivers, as part of the ongoing efforts to check accidents in Ernakulam district. The programme will begin in January. The first phase of the training programme will be held at YMCA, Aluva, on January 3. Training will be given to 30 drivers during this programme. Experts will take classes on the occasion. Representatives of oil and vehicle manufacturing companies will also attend.
