Sangareddy: Improving upon its previous performance of 1,165 units under the Rajiv Yuva Sakthi programme, the Medak district youth services department is gearing for launching of 1,700 individual and group units at an estimated cost of Rs. 18 crores this year. Division-wise launching of the units will take place from 13 of this month after finalising the revised list of beneficiaries with fresh acceptances from banks financing the projects varying from Rs. 50,000 to 1,00,000. Speaking to The Hindu District Youth Welfare officer T.V.L. Maheswari said that the actual target of 2,731 units could not be achieved as many beneficiaries in the age group of 18 to 25 years had failed to deposit their share of 10 per cent investment in the bank concerned. She said that without the deposit, the department could not release the 20 per cent subsidy. However, she said that the RYS programme, compared to other youth empowering programmes, had been successful as the recovery percentage stood at 90 much to the satisfaction of the banks.
Skill development
The department has the potential to train 1,500 youth in various trades with the help of organisations like NIIT, Reddy Labs and Excel Security Academy. However, absorption by the firms concerned has been slow. Only 13 out 67 of the first batch by the Reddy Labs have found employment and a second batch of 200 is currently undergoing training in Zaheerabad. Similarly, Setwin is training 500 unemployed youths.
Youth festival
Even as the youth of the district has limited its participation to folk dance and music in the State-wide Youth festival out of a long list of categories, the department is holding the district level selection here on Wednesday. Similarly, a group of 25 will be soon leaving for Visakhaptanam, a designated host district for Medak under the youth exchange scheme.
