Lift irrigation staff agitate for dues

Threaten to launch civil disobedience movement

BHUBANESWAR: Employees of the Orissa Lift Irrigation Corporation (OLIC) on Tuesday staged a demonstration on Mahatma Gandhi Marg demanding release of grants for payment of dues.

Post-retirement benefit

Employees of OLIC, who retired voluntarily from the corporation four years ago, were yet to receive their post-retirement benefit, Ratnakar Mohanty, general Secretary of Orissa Lift Irrigation Employees' Federation, said. "Though the Provident Fund Commissioner asked the State government to pay pension to these employees, the authorities approached court against the order," Mr. Mohanty said and alleged the corporation had wasted about Rs. 9 crores that was deposited towards the provident fund.

`Scheme a failure'

The federation said the State government had launched `pani panchayat yojna' in the name of reorganising the OLIC, but the programme had been a failure.

Retrenchment

"The State government has so far retrenched 7,300 field staff of the corporation after constitution `pani panchayats' at different places," Mr. Mohanty said.

The employees of the organisation threatened to launch civil disobedience movement before the residence of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in the first week of January, if all the pending dues were not cleared soon.
