HDMC removes 11 petty shops in Dharwad

DEMOLITION DRIVE: Encroachment on corporation property being brought down in Dharwad on Tuesday.

DHARWAD: Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation conducted a "mini-demolition drive" here on Tuesday to clear structures on drains and corporation property.

The drive was restricted to Sadhanakeri and Manjunathpur areas, where petty shops had come up on the corporation property.

The drive began around 8 a.m. and ended at noon, after illegal structures, including two rooms attached to two houses in HUDCO Colony in Sadhanakeri, were demolished.

These rooms were built on the underground drain that passed by their houses.

The corporation had instructed the owners of the houses to clear the encroachments. But they had not removed the illegal structures, the corporation officials said.

On Tuesday, the rooms were demolished and a staircase that was built on the drainage line was also cleared. Compound walls built on the corporation property at HUDCO Colony were also removed.

The authorities also cleared 11 petty shops, including seven near Rayara Math Circle in Manjunathapur and four on Kabbur Road Cross.

Executive Engineer D.I. Pattar and Assistant Commissioners A.S. Mirajkar and S.Y. Rangappanavar, conducted the demolition drive.

Mr. Pattar said that the debris would be cleared on Wednesday by the corpoartion. The drive was part of HDMC's action plan to check illegal structures coming up in areas where the demolition drive had been conducted earlier.
