Construction of drains only solution

Staff Reporter

TAMBARAM : A section of residents, who have been affected by stagnation of rainwater, and Pammal municipal authorities have said construction of drains was the only solution to prevent stagnation of rainwater or sewage in areas around the Tirupananthaal lake in Pammal.

In a joint statement, a section of residents of Pammal, particularly in Eswaran Nagar, and V. Karunanidhi and R. Kandhavel, chairman and vice-chairman respectively of the municipality, said that rain water run-off from M. G. R. Nagar, V. O. C. Nagar, Poompuhar Nagar, Rajiv Gandhi Nagar and other areas used to drain into the lake.

By preventing the flow of rainwater into the lake, nearby areas were inundated, the residents pointed out. The stagnation of rainwater in these areas, especially on Kannadasan and N.S.K. Streets and in Eswaran Nagar near the lake, caused severe inconvenience continuously.

Councillors said that drains to transport rainwater and sewage could be built around the lake bund without damaging either the bund or polluting the lake. Though the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board has begun work on preparing detailed project reports for an underground drainage network in many local bodies in the southern suburbs including Pammal, building drains around the lake would be an effective solution until the project was executed, they added.
