Vijayawada
A. Saye Sekhar
VIJAYAWADA: Ch. Krishna Kumar alias Nani will step down from the post of Deputy Mayor in a few days to pave the way for another Congress corporator. Mr. Kumar owes allegiance to Kankipadu MLA Devineni Rajasekhar alias Nehru. The legislator is pinning hopes on securing the clearance from the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee for the candidature of first division corporator Venkata Satyanarayana alias Satyam.Though local MP Lagadapati Rajagopal has been nursing the idea of fielding his candidate for the post, the Nehru lobby is vehemently opposed to it. Vijayawada East legislator Vangaveeti Radhakrishna doesn't want to pit any candidate from his side. Instead, he will extend support to the candidate fielded by Mr. Nehru. For, this was a quid pro quo arrived at by the two through a `common contact'. As part of the arrangement, Mr. Nehru extended his support to the candidature of M.V.Ratna Bindu, who belongs to Mr. Radhakrishna's group, as the party's mayoral candidate. However, Mr. Rajagopal pulled the proverbial strings in Delhi and had Mallika Begum elected Mayor, relegating Ms. Bindu to the next "two-year term." Mr. Radhakrishna says that the MP's group shall not stake its claim for Deputy Mayor's post, for an agreement has been reached when Ms. Begum was chosen for the mayoral assignment.
Hopes on APCC
This time, Mr. Nehru is serious about enthroning Mr. Satyam as deputy mayor. Mr. Radkarishna's support becomes obvious, as Mr. Nehru continues to stick to his promise of making Ms. Bindu mayor after two years. Besides, Nehru is confident that no objection from the side of the MP will be entertained by the APCC. However, the MP is said to be sparing no efforts, albeit from behind the scenes, to convince the higher-ups in the party to have his candidate nominated for the deputy mayor's post. He is surreptitiously making efforts to push through his nominee.
