Indian boxers do well

Special Correspondent

DOHA: The Indian boxers continued to do well as Manoj Kumar and Vijender made the quarterfinals in the Asian Games at the Aspire Hall here on Tuesday.

Manoj was too good in the 64 kg class as he raced past Yao Chun Tsai of Chinese Taipei 25-10. Manoj asserted himself in the second and third rounds to breeze through. The 19-year-old from Chandigarh will be up against Serik Sapiyev of Kazakhstan in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Vijender was the other Indian boxer to make the quarterfinals as he recorded a 34-18 triumph over Mustafa Farrah of Syria.

Sanjay Kolte in 48 kg, Jitender Kumar in 51kg, Diwakar Prasad in 57kg and Harpreet Singh in 91 kg are the other Indian boxers in the quarterfinals.

Fourth win

In kabaddi, India won its fourth successive match as it defeated Iran 38-17. In handball, India went down 30-47 to Bahrain in a group `A' league match.

In volleyball, India lost 21-25, 22-25, 25-23, 23-25 to Saudi Arabia.

The Indian swimmers stayed in troubled waters. Ankur Poseria won the heat in the 50-metre butterfly event at 25.92 but that was not good enough to put him in the top 8 for the final. Virdhaval Khade clocked 25.59 in the same event.

In 400-metre freestyle, Rehan Poncha clocked 4:07.72, finishing fifth in his heat. Virdhaval Khade, Rehan Poncha, Arjun Muralidharan and Ankur Poseria finished sixth in their heat in the 4 x 100-metre freestyle relay (3:35.94).

In the women's 50-metre freestyle heat, Shikha Tandon was joint fourth with a Thai girl with a timing of 27.40.
