Posting of additional staff recommended in Niloufer

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Director of Medical Education I. Venkateswara Rao, who enquired into the death of seven children in Niloufer Hospital during the last 24 hours, has recommended that additional staff be posted in the emergency wing. Dr. Rao, who submitted the report to the Government, said that nothing significant could have been done with regard to patient care of those who had died, as they were "bad cases". However, more measures could have been taken with regard to administration of the hospital.

He also recommended that Resident Medical Officer should stay in the hospital and the laboratories should function round-the-clock with the requisite equipment and technicians.

Principal Secretary (Health) P. K. Agarwal told reporters that steps would be taken to improve the functioning. He said that serious cases were being referred to the hospital and in some cases the children were dying in spite of the best efforts of the doctors. Hospital Superintendent N. C. K. Reddy said that one child each died of suspected Dengue and brain fever, three of respiratory infections and two due to other infections.
